What is Scouting?
Scouting is a program for youth designed to build desirable qualities of character, to train in the responsibilities of participating in citizenship, and develop first-rate personal fitness. Troop 919 accomplishes these goals through an outdoor program and community service.
What kind of activities are in scouting?
Scout troops meet once a week to learn basic scout skills. Most troops go on an outing at least once a month. Troop 919 meets every Sunday at 7 pm. The troop has a camping trip or back packing trip each month. In addition to that, Troop 919 participates in many community events all year and serves the community by collecting food for local food banks.
Why would I put my son in a Boy Scout Troop?
Boy Scouts provides an excellent opportunity to emphasize positive character traits, make new friends, and participate in activities that will be life changing to him.
At what age can he join?
If your son is a WEBELO Scout, he will bridge over from a cub scout unit. Otherwise, 10 years of age.How can my son become a member of a Scout Troop?
Simply complete a Scout Youth application, turn it in to the Scoutmaster or Committee Chair of the unit, and pay the unit dues.
How much does it cost to join a scout troop?
Troop 919 has annual dues of $120 per scout. There is a $5 discount for each sibling. Other costs are for each outing. Troop 919 charges $12 for an overnight back packing trip and $18 for an overnight camping trip.
What does the money pay for?
Dues money pays for awards, training for leaders, and basic equipment for the boys to use on the outings: fuel for stoves, replacing filters for water pumps, ropes for knots and lashings, etc. Money charged for outings pays for the food the boys purchase for the outing, as well as any required campground charges. Additionally, it covers BSA membership dues and insurance.
Are there any other costs associated with scouting?
Yes, Troop 919 participates in a long term camp, typically about a week. This is an exciting camp, where each boy earns merit badges, learns how to lead, and participates in many outdoor activities. Costs for camp vary from camp to camp, but the typical price can range from $450 to $600. In addition, some outings may cost extra, for instance, rock climbing or white water rafting requires professionals with special skills. To offset some of these costs, Troop 919 participates in various (optional) fund raising opportunities throughout the year.
How can parents participate?
Parent participation is crucial for the success of all children. In Scouting, parent participation involves volunteering to be a leader or becoming a member of the troop committee. Also, parents are encouraged to participate in the outings. If you are new to camping or back packing, that is okay. We will teach you!
What if my son is involved in other activities?
Scouting is a year round activity. There is no requirement that each scout participate in a certain number of meetings or outings each year. The more the boy participates, the more he will gain and grow in the scouting program. However, life is not singular and therefore scouting should not be. If your son has other activities, then this is a great opportunity to learn and apply how to manage his time. In other words, a boy can still join a troop if he is in other activities, and it will not be a hindrance, but an opportunity for growth.
How long is a troop meeting?
Troop 919 meetings begin at 7 pm and we strive to end by 8:30 pm.
How often does the troop have an outing?
Troop 919 has a camping trip or back packing trip each month. Included with those trips can be: rock climbing, high ropes challenge course, shooting sports, troop competitions, canoeing, rafting, cycling, and swimming – just to name a few.
What types of outings will my son be doing?
Troop 919 strives to put together activities that will inspire confidence in the boys. Our past outings have included: shotgun shooting, rock climbing, river rafting, back packing, camping, cycling, horseback riding, archery, rifle shooting, swimming sports, hiking, and just enjoying the great outdoors.
Can parents participate on the outings?
Yes. Troop 919 encourages parents to participate.
What if I don’t have all the equipment?
We understand those new to scouting may not have everything. Troop 919 has some gear (tents, back packs, water pumps, stoves, etc.) that you can use.
